‘The Avengers’ Sets A New Opening Weekend Box Office Record

Pretty much everyone expected The Avengers to do very well at the box office but early in the week, there was talk that the film might enjoy the biggest US opening weekend box office of all time. All across the country, fans lined up at movie theaters in every city to see the “biggest superhero film of all time”. Today we learn that, yes,The Avengers did very well at the box office … and yes, the film enjoyed the biggest opening weekend ever … taking in over $200 million dollars in just 3 days.

To say that “Marvel’s The Avengers” had a great weekend at the box office would be a drastic understatement. “The Avengers” — in which the powers of Captain America, Iron Man, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Thor and the Hulk combine to save the world from the villainous Loki — was virtually the only movie anyone saw this weekend. It earned a total of $200.3 million, easily beating out “Harry Potter” as the biggest debut ever. Just to put things in perspective, the weekend’s second grossing movie was “Think Like a Man,” which earned a relatively meager $8 million.
Yes, The Avengers set the new opening weekend box office record … but the money is still being counted. When it’s all said and done, it looks like the film will take in around $207 million for the weekend (plus $447.4 million at the foreign box office):
Disney just announced that Marvel’s The Avengers made as much as $56.8M for Sunday’s gross. That would put the Disney film’s 3-day record-breaking opening weekend’s domestic cume about $207.1M and its foreign total at $447.4M for a global $654.5M. But only Monday actuals will tell the final tally.
Not only is this great news for comic book movie fans but I think it proves to the world that Joss Whedon — who directed and wrote the film — is a serious force to be reckoned with. Whedon fans have known for YEARS how amazing a writer/director Joss is … and now the rest of the world knows it too. I saw The Avengers for the second time on Saturday and the first thing I heard when the film was over was someone saying, “They HAVE to get Joss Whedon to direct the sequel” … and I wholeheartedly agree. Now that Joss has proven himself, I think Hollywood will take him more seriously … and that means more fantastic entertainment for us in the future. Congratulations Joss on a job very well done. Biggest Opening Weekend Ever! Wow.
