Boeing workers busted in drug sweep at plant

Federal agents arrested dozens of current and former Boeing workers on Thursday on charges of illegally dealing in painkillers and anti-anxiety drugs at a plant that makes military aircraft models used in the Iraqand
Afghanistanwars.Workers were led in handcuffs out of the Ridley Park,Pennsylvania, plant in the early-morning bust by agents wearing FBI andDEA bullet-proof vests, witnesses said.

As a result of an investigation that began four years ago at the Boeing plant, 23 people were charged with selling the prescription painkiller Oxycontin and other drugs, U.S. Attorney Zane David Memeger told a news conference in Philadelphia.
Another 14 people were charged with attempted possession of various drugs for trying to buy them, he said.
Boeing employs more than 6,000 people at the Ridley Park plant, where the V-22 Osprey vertical take-off aircraft and H-47 Chinook helicopters are produced. The Osprey and Chinook are standard U.S. military aircraft used in Iraq and Afghanistan.
There was no evidence that the integrity of the work on any aircraft had been compromised, Memeger said.
“This investigation and prosecution focused not only on the sellers, but also on the users because of the critical role that these employees play in manufacturing military aircraft,” Memeger said.
Vito Guarino, acting Drug Enforcement Administration special agent in charge, said: “These sales placed the individual abusers as well as society at large at risk.”
Boeing spokesman Damien Mills said Boeing cooperated with the investigation and took steps to make sure the employees under suspicion were in no position to compromise the safety or quality of the aircraft.
All but one of those charged is a current or former Boeing employee, authorities said. Another person was expected to be arrested as well. The employees charged in the case were suspended, Boeing said.
SHOCKED
A Boeing sheet metal assembler drinking a beer at the nearby Burgundy Lounge after his shift ended on Thursday said he had been aware of some illegal drug activity but did not know how widespread it may have been.
“It’s kind of like high school,” said the 20-year Boeing veteran who did not want to be identified. “If you are looking for something, you know where to go to look for the stuff.”
He added that he had never seen another worker obviously under the influence of drugs at the plant, located in an industrial suburb west of the Philadelphia International Airport.
Another Boeing sheet metal worker, who also did not want his name used, said his co-workers had been shocked to see fellow employees led out of the plant in handcuffs.
He said many people he knew were unaware of any drug use at the plant.
But he said: “These things can happen in any plant in the country. It probably has a lot to do with stress.”
During the investigation, agents found evidence of the powerful painkiller Oxycontin as well as fentanyl, which is sold in lozenge form as Actiq, being dealt at the plant, officials said.
Also found were the painkiller buprenorphine, which is sold as Suboxone, and the anti-anxiety drugalprazolam, sold as Xanax, they said.
The investigation was triggered in 2006, Mills said, when some employees contacted the company’s internal ethics hotline with suspicions that there was illegal drug activity at the plant.
He said Boeing launched an internal probe and in August 2007 turned its findings over to federal investigators.
Boeing issued a statement saying it “commends the U.S. Attorney’s Office, and other federal law enforcement agencies for their rigorous and thorough investigation, throughout which we took appropriate steps to ensure safety of our employees and the absolute integrity and quality of the products we produce for our customers.”
If convicted, those charged with distribution face possible sentences of 10 to 260 years in prison and millions of dollars in fines, the U.S. Attorney’s office said.

DOD: Military chaplains may conduct weddings for gay servicemembers

Ok, this counts as a wow.  Andrew Harmon at the Advocate has more:
"A military chaplain may participate in or officiate any private ceremony, whether on or off a military installation, provided that the ceremony is not prohibited by applicable state and local law. Further, a chaplain is not required to participate in or officiate a private ceremony if doing so would be in variance with the tenets of his or her religion or personal beliefs. Finally, a military chaplain’s participation does not constitute an endorsement of the ceremony by DoD."(A PDF of the memo is available here.)
Kudos to the President on this one. This is a big deal, in my view. Now, legally, I believe the Pentagon allows lots of different events on its bases (thus the reason conservatives are permitted to give speeches, book signings, and even hold evangelical concerts). Thus, I suspect you could argue that permitting same-sex marriages on base does not violate DOMA because the government is not treating a same-sex marriages the same as heterosexual marriages. Rather, the government is treating one event just like any other event. For example, the government doesn't have to condone evangelicals or Sarah Palin's book in order to permit events related to either on their bases. So DOMA isn't invoked. DOMA is only invoked if a gay marriage is given the same benefit as a straight marriage, and the only way it's going to get that benefit is by being a "marriage." In this case, lots of events are permitted on bases, not just marriages.

Now, politically one should expect the Republicans to explode. They tried once to pass an amendment banning same-sex marriages on military bases and I'm sure they're going to do it again. It remains to be seen if some GOP nut will offer similar language in the Senate, but I can't imagine they won't - unless McConnell doesn't want anything distracting Rs from the election, and lately anti-gay politics has not served the GOP well. Look at DADT. It's been nothing but a win for this administration and Dems generally. Not only are gay Democrats more enthusiastic than before, but Republicans are smarting over the GOP debate audience's recent booing of a gay soldier. If the Rs wants to pick a fight here, the Democrats should respond with the booing issue. So there's danger here for the Rs as well.

So, overall, I think this is big. I also think that the administration flinched the last time the issue came up, when the House Rs went nuts over this, so this time they'd better have their ducks in a row and not mess this up.

OMG, opposite of yummy: Man serves food with spunk

yogurt-yeast-infection.jpg
Did you know "adulterating food" is a criminal offense? Oh, yes. A man named Anthony Garcia is set to plead guilty next week in New Mexico for serving three women samples of yogurt with his semen in it. The spunk went down at Sunflower Farmers Market, where Garcia was working in January. When sentenced, Garcia will face up to eight years in prison....where I'm pretty sure they serve yogurt.

Two Florida Gay Men Attacked In Likely Hate Crime

HatecrimeManuel Galan and Cirildo Soliz, two openly gay men who live in Immokalee, Florida, were attacked by a gang of five men last week. The incident occurred in the middle of the street, they say, and was completely ignored by passersby.
From Naples News:
Both Galan [27] and Soliz, 21, are openly gay but are just good friends, Galan said. They have lived in Immokalee for almost their entire lives and had been called names before. This was the first time verbal attacks got physical, they said.
The attackers whaled with fists and feet on Galan’s and Soliz’ faces, ribs and limbs and repeatedly yelled derogatory names for gay people, the report said. Galan and Soliz refused medical treatment after the beating.
“I don’t hate who I am. I like who I am. I don’t hide my life,” Galan said. “They just don’t like gay people, so they attacked us.”
...
Soliz told deputies that once the kicking ceased, one of the attackers pointed his finger at him and said, “I’m going to kill you and I know where you live.”

The most disturbing part of this story is that Galan and Soliz know a few of their attackers, against whom they're now pressing charges. The men also say they refuse to be intimidated into hiding.

Said Soliz's mother, Yolanda Vasquez, "I tell him, ‘I don’t want you going out of the house, I don’t want them hurting you.’ He tells me, ‘I’m not going to hide from anybody.’"

Oklahoma Paper Blasts "Perverted" Gay Election Board Member

MaryFallinOklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin recently appointed an out gay man, Jim Roth, to the state's election board.
This does not please the editors at the right-wing weekly The Tulsa Beacon, who wrote a vile editorial criticizing the move.

"Gov. Mary Fallin, who campaigned on her genuine Christian values, has nominated an outspoken homosexual to a post on the important Oklahoma State Election Board," they wrote, clearly convinced that Christianity and LGBT inclusion are mutually exclusive.

"She is required to name a Democrat but nowhere is there a requirement to name a homosexual to an important post," reads the editorial.

It goes on to claim the board "needs people of integrity, not those who live a perverted lifestyle, whether it be homosexuality or heterosexual promiscuity, alcoholism, drug addiction or a host of other personal problems."

Of course the paper does not go into Roth's personal life, and obviously wants readers to associate homosexuality with promiscuity and drug addiction, one of the oldest -- and nastiest -- tricks in the anti-gay book.

Gay Teacher Back To Work After Investigation

DakotaAryKristopher Franks, the Fort Worth teacher who booted Dakota Ary from his class for anti-gay comments, returns to work today following an investigation into alleged improper behavior.

Franks was put on paid administrative leave last Monday for reasons unknown, though reportedly unrelated to the Ary incident, which became a national news story.

The Dallas Voice has more details:

Franks, who had not spoken to the press previously on the advice of his union representative, said Thursday afternoon that he had just met with Fort Worth Independent School District administrators, who told him the nearly weeklong investigation had determined that the allegations against him were unfounded. He did not elaborate on the substance of those allegations.
Franks also said administrators had given him the option of returning to teach at Western Hills High or transferring to another school in the district.
“I haven’t made up my mind yet what I’m going to do,” Franks told Dallas Voice by phone Thursday afternoon. “I’m going to go back to work tomorrow, and I will talk to my boss [the district’s world languages supervisor], and see what she says and decide what’s the best thing to do from there.”
Franks told the paper that he's satisfied with the investigation, and now has to decide how to move forward. “I can go back to work, which is great. But now I just have to figure out how to fix the damage this whole thing has done to my personal life," he said.

Apple to unveil new iPhone on Oct. 4

Apple to unveil new iPhone on Oct. 4

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Apple confirmed Tuesday that it will hold a press event on Oct. 4 at its Cupertino, Calif., headquarters. Expected to be the star attraction: The long-awaited iPhone 5.
It's been 15 months since Apple's iPhone 4 went on sale, making this lag between new models the longest since the iPhone debuted in 200

As always, the next-generation iPhone has been the subject of intense speculation. Almost daily, blogs and news agencies offer up new tidbits based on supposed leaks from hardware component makers or iPhone case designers to glean any information about what the next device could look like.

The dominant rumors for the next iPhone involve an 8-megapixel camera, longer battery life, a faster processor and availability on the Sprint (SFortune 500) network. Others have claimed that the device will have a larger screen, a curved display, no home button, support for 4G networks, and more memory.

In the past, about half the pre-launch rumors have turned out to be correct.

Exploding D.C. Toilet Sends Woman To Hospital at Federal building ( it was the Bidet to end all Bidets)

from VIEWS FROM A BROAD
I bet she goes back..again and again..
A female employee at a federal building in Washington, D.C., went to the hospital early this week after suffering serious injuries from sitting on an exploding toilet.
Toilet-explode
DC Fire Spokesman Pete Piringer confirmed the woman was taken the the hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries.
The GSA Regional office building employees were sent a memo, warning them to not use the bathrooms in the building, because the plumbing may be dangerous. The building is on 7th and D SW.
"DO NOT flush toilets or use any domestic water. Due to a mechanical failure, there is high air pressure in the domestic water system that resulted in damage to toilets. The engineering staff is working to correct the issue," the memo said. "There has been damage to flushed toilets that has resulted in injuries. We will announce when the issue is resolved."

The man packing a dozen peckers in his pants: Traveller arrested smuggling live hummingbirds in his trousers

Last updated at 6:18 PM on 27th September 2011
If you were sat next to this airline passenger, you might understand why he was fidgeting around so much.
This Dutch traveller was caught trying to smuggle more than a dozen live hummingbirds in special pouches sewn into the inside of his underwear at Rochambeau airport in Cayenne, French Guiana.
The birds were individually wrapped in cloth and taped up to prevent them from 'escaping' from their sweaty travel container.
Keep your pecker up: More than a dozen hummingbirds were found wrapped up in pouches sewn into the front of a Dutch traveller's pants in Dutch Guiana

But fortunately for the unfortunate birds authorities noticed the passenger acting suspiciously and he was detained by French customs officers.
When his underwear was removed, officials discovered the haul of hummingbirds - who are not believed to have been sedated - lining the front.
The man, who reportedly has a previous conviction for trying to smuggle the tiny creatures, was arrested.
It is not clear if he has yet been charged.

Plastered College Student, 18, Coins New Term During Arrest In Iowa City Alley

Very attractive man... Why isn't he at my parties!

Meet Christopher Janson.

The University of Iowa student was arrested late Friday night for public drunkenness and indecent conduct (for peeing in an Iowa City alley). Janson was collared after cops spotted him “almost falling over when zipping up his pants.”

When confronted by officers, the 18-year-old Janson--who smelled of booze and had slurred speech -- coined a phrase never previously seen in police reports.

Concerned about possible criminal charges, Janson asked Iowa City cops about the criteria for “publicurintoxication.” That marvelous conflation of misdemeanor activities--which, in Janson’s defense, do often go hand in hand--is not currently seen in the state’s official criminal statutes.

'Is My Son Gay?' App Hits Android Market

"Is My Son Gay?," a new app available in the Android Market, has a rather simple premise: It claims to determine, through a series of 20 questions, whether or not the survey-taker's offspring is, in fact, a homosexual. And yet despite this simplicity of purpose, the app is--surprise!--incredibly controversial.
The French app itself is a 20-question survey of "Yes" or "No" questions designed to identify your son's sexual preference.  Translated into English by resident Huff Post French speaker Alice Hines, these questions are:
1. Does he like to dress up nicely? Does he pay close attention to his outfits

2. Does he like football?

3. Before he was born did you wish he would be a girl?

4. Has he ever gotten into or participated in a fight?

5. Does he read sports magazines?

6. Does he have a best friend

7. Does he like team sports?

8. Is he prudish/modest?

9. Does he like diva singers?

10. Does he spend a long time in the bathroom

11. Does he have a tongue, nose or ear piercing

12. Does he spend time getting ready before being seen in public?

13. Have you asked yourself questions about your son's sexual orientation?

14. Are you divorced?

15. Does he like musical comedies?

16. Has he introduced you to a girlfriend ever?

17. Is the father (you) very strict or authoritarian with his son?

18. In your family is the father absent?

19. Was he shy as a child?

20. Is he close to his father?

Reaction around the Internet has not been kind. Gay-friendly Instinct Magazine said that the app is based on the "science of tired and offensive stereotypes," while Jezebel laments the app's "horrible, stereotypical questions." The app is not entirely homophobic, apparently, as Jezebel reports that, if your son is determined to not be gay, the app says "No need to look the other way! ... He is gay! ... ACCEPT IT! ..."
