Until Thursday, the photo Desert Hot Springs, Calif., City Council member Karl Baker had on his Adam4Adam hookup profile was a shot of him taken during a council meeting.
The photo reportedly depicted Baker sitting in front of a microphone with his nameplate clearly visible but did not include the name of the city or its logo.

Adam4Adam bills itself as a “free online dating & hookup” site for gay men and is legal for adults.

Baker, 70, who is openly gay and single, swapped the photo for another one after he was asked about it during a radio show.

“I just did not want anything that was titillating at all,” he explained to The Desert Sun, adding that his use of the site was a personal choice that was made on his own time.

“I figured that the only people who were interested in that website would be those who had a specific interest,” he said.

The councilman, who is seeking his third term, said that while voters are free to make up their minds, he feels he has served the city well. “And my personal business is my personal business,” he said.

Russell Betts, the city’s mayor pro tem, who was informed of the situation by a resident, said he didn’t normally comment on personal lifestyle issues, but said “that certainly does not seem to be appropriate behavior for somebody elected to office.”
