He's Coming Out

Rep. Mike Fleck (R-Huntingdon, Pennsylvania) has come out as gay in a highly personal story first found in the Huntingdon Daily News. Fleck becomes the nation's only sitting out Republican state legislator.
Rep-Mike-Fleck-213x300In his coming-out story, he reaffirms his devout Christianity and his allegiance to a party that is explicitly anti-gay:
"The Republican party is all about the government needing to stay out of people's lives. I'm not a one-issue person and it's not a one-issue party."
Neither party is "one-issue" and most voters aren't either, but there's a big different between, say, what you think about drones or how you feel about the role of entitlements or if you think we need more money or less pumped into national defense and the issue of whether or not you, as a person, deserve equal rights.
Republicanism and Libertarianism also continues to baffle me with their obsession over the government being inherently bad. If it needs to "stay out of our lives" so much, why do they support marriage certificates at all, let alone support keeping them away from gay people? Do they really, truly think social programs are so bad that we'd be better off cutting everyone off and going with the "yer on yer own" approach? And also, get the fuck off of my roads and don't come crying to me when a hurricane wipes away everything you own or early-onset dementia destroys your family's means of support.
But anyway, it's always positive when gay people come out, regardless of their other beliefs—which are up for discussion as separate issues.

  1. Now all he has to do is to grow up and incorporate some values into his persona, and he will be half way home.
