Step Up as ONE, Austin!

More Info	The ONE Campaign will be throwing its first celebratory event in Austin, Texas on April 5, 2011. Since this day falls on TOMS Shoes' event "ONE Day Without Shoes"- we are working in collaboration with TOMS Shoes as well. They will be having a huge march/rally that will start at the UT Tower at 5pm and lead out to the Capitol around 5:45pm. The idea is for TOMS to raise awareness about their cause creatively, and then lead in to ONE's event at the capitol directly afterwards. Step Up as ONE, Austin has 3 tiers. Local Action: Shoe drive to benefit 4 local organizations: SafePlace, Street Youth Ministries, Saint Louise House, Mobile Loaves and Fishes. They will be tabling at this event to show the community what services they offer and to demonstrate where the shoes will be going to. Interactive Educational Tool: Shoe showcase- 4 popular brands of shoes will be showcased by demonstrating where the shoes originated (what country made in, who made it, how made it) all the way to how they ended up in the store that we bought them from. Demonstrates Global Economy. Global Action: Speakers and bands will talk about importance of acting locally AND globally. Furthermore, we will have a petition/plaque for every attendee to sign. The following week that petition will be hand-delivered to our US Senators. This petition will more than likely ask for our elected officials to say NO to budget cuts for the world's poor. Directly afterward we will have a huge photo press shot with everyone involved to have the press include in their outlets and to show that we can all STAND together as ONE in this fight to end extreme poverty. We have 30+ organizations getting involved from campus and the community, including Oxfam, CARE, United Methodist Church, RESULTS, and so many more. We would love to have you join us, whether it is merely coming to show support for the ONE Cause to Make Poverty History, or to come and volunteer at the event. Our speakers: First Speaker: Council Member Sheryl Cole and Second Speaker: TBA Our bands: First Band: Dave Madden and Second Band: Erin Ivey Further, a representative from our ONE Campaign Headquarters in DC will be flying in to show Austin some love from DC! We will need help in sorting shoes, directing organizations, keeping time with schedule, sound system, and more.
