Christians Only At TX Prayer Rally

via Joe. My. God. by Joe on 6/30/11

And here's why, according to an event organizer:
This is an explicitly Christian event because we are going to be praying to the one true God through His son, Jesus Christ. It would be idolatry of the worst sort for Christians to gather and invite false gods like Allah and Buddha and their false prophets to be with us at that time. Because we have religious liberty in this country, they are free to have events and pray to Buddha and Allah on their own. But this is time of prayer to the One True God through His son, Jesus Christ, who is The Way, The Truth, and The Life.
I'm still trying to figure out how a state-sanctioned, explicitly exclusive religious event is being allowed to take place. Where are the lawsuits?

MSNBC's Mark Halperin Suspended for Crude Obama Quip

via Towleroad News #gay by Andy Towle on 6/30/11

Halperin

MSNBC pundit Mark Halperin has been suspended indefinitely following remarks he made on Morning Joe this morning regarding President Obama, which he was goaded into saying by the hosts.

Said MSNBC in a statement:

Mark Halperin's comments this morning were completely inappropriate and unacceptable. We apologize to the President, The White House and all of our viewers. We strive for a high level of discourse and comments like these have no place on our air.  Therefore, Mark will be suspended indefinitely from his role as an analyst.

Halperin agreed:

I completely agree with everything in MSNBC's statement about my remark. I believe that the step they are taking in response is totally appropriate. Again, I want to offer a heartfelt and profound apology to the President, to my MSNBC colleagues, and to the viewers. My remark was unacceptable, and I deeply regret it.

News Corp Sells MySpace

via Joe. My. God. by Joe on 6/30/11

Six year's ago Rupert Murdoch's News Corp purchased MySpace for $580M. Yesterday the floundering site was sold for a mere $35M.
The sale closes a complex chapter in the history of the Internet and of the News Corporation, which was widely envied by other media companies when it acquired MySpace in 2005. At that time, MySpace was the world's fastest-growing social network, with 20 million unique visitors each month in the United States. That figure soon soared to 70 million, but the network could not keep pace with Facebook, which overtook MySpace two years ago. As users fled MySpace, so, too, did advertisers. The market research firm eMarketer estimates that the site will earn about $183 million in worldwide ad revenue this year, down from $605 million at its peak, when the site introduced many Web users and many advertisers to the concept of social networking.

Deportation Proceedings Dropped in High-Profile Same-Sex Immigration Case of Henry Velandia and Josh Vandiver

via Towleroad News #gay by Andy Towle on 6/30/11

Henryjosh

The U.S. has dropped deportation proceedings against Henry Velandia in what is being seen as a significant victory for married same-sex binational couples who face being torn apart due to unjust immigration laws.

The NYT:

Immigration lawyers and gay rights advocates said the decision represented a significant shift in policy and could open the door to the cancellation of deportations for other immigrants in same-sex marriages.

"This action shows that the government has not only the power but the inclination to do the right thing when it comes to protecting certain vulnerable populations from deportation," said the couple's lawyer, Lavi Soloway...

...The judge granted the motion to close the case on June 13, and Mr. Soloway received an official copy of the order on Wednesday.

The decision to cancel the deportation came as federal immigration officials were thoroughly reviewing their deportation policies.

Soloway Said Soloway, of Stop the Deportations, in a press release:

"This historic decision by the government to close deportation proceedings against Henry Velandia allows him to stay in the United States with his American husband, Josh Vandiver, without the fear that they will be torn apart. This unprecedented move will save Josh and Henry's marriage and end the threat of deportation, while Josh continues to fight for his right to sponsor Henry for a green card based on their marriage and the fate of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is resolved by Congress or the Supreme Court.

"For the first time the Department of Homeland Security has demonstrated that when it comes to the spouses of lesbian and gay Americans the government does indeed have the discretion necessary to evaluate the merits of each case and, where appropriate, to decline to pursue deportation. Importantly, it is proof that we can bring about positive change by telling our stories and educating the general public, elected officials and executive branch agencies about the cruel impact of DOMA on the daily lives of married binational lesbian and gay couples. This decision will lay the foundation for administrative closure of other other deportation cases involving gay and lesbian couples. Stop The Deportations – DOMA Project campaign will continue to fight for every binational couple facing deportation. Even so, we will also continue to urge the Obama administration to institute an immediate moratorium on all deportations of spouses of lesbian and gay Americans. In the end, we must defeat DOMA so that all married couples are equal under federal law."

The FBI Invited Westboro Baptist Church to Train its Police Officers and Agents

via Towleroad News #gay by Andy Towle on 6/30/11

The FBI invited Westboro Baptist Church to two of its facilities to help train agents and police officers, NPR reports:

Wbc ...the FBI recently invited leaders of the fundamentalist church to the Quantico Marine base in Virginia to talk to FBI agents as part of the bureau's counterterrorism training program. But after four sessions this spring, the FBI canceled the arrangement amid criticism from inside the bureau, while church leaders claimed that they had been misled.

Apparently officers needed training on the kind of hate  theWBC inspires:

He said the program was designed to teach agents "how to stay measured when they are speaking with a witness or a suspect with whom they have a strong, visceral disagreement."

[Timothy] Phelps conceded that strong, visceral disagreement is one of the emotions Westboro inspires. And that's what he found in the classrooms he visited. Officials say there were about 50 local law enforcement officials and agents in each session, and they say Westboro wasn't paid for its participation. Phelps confirmed that no money exchanged hands.

Phelps says he had no idea he was part of a "domestic terrorism curriculum":

Law enforcement officials who attended the session said it was focused on domestic terrorism. They were told that the FBI invited Westboro members to the class so police officers and agents could see extremists up close and understand what makes them tick.

Human Rights Campaign Shop Vandalized by Radical LGBT Group

via Towleroad News #gay by Andy Towle on 6/30/11

A group calling itself 'The Right Honorable Wicked Stepmothers' Traveling, Drinking and Debating Society and Men's Auxiliary' vandalized the HRC Store in Washington D.C.'s Dupont Circle on Tuesday night with pink paint, coating the windows and writing the word "Stonewall" across the front sidewalk, the Washington Blade reports.

Hrc The group left a lengthy message on the website Pastebin.com outlining its reasons for doing so:

This week marks the 42nd anniversary of the Stonewall Riots...

...The modern LGBT movement owes its success to three days of smashing, burning, punching, and kicking--all of it happily indiscriminate--and the confrontational tactics of groups like ACT-UP that followed in the decades since. Yet, somehow we've forgotten our riotous roots.

The group also explained why it was targeting its own community:

Why, you're asking, did we specifically target the HRC, a massive national gay rights non-profit as opposed to vomiting urine on Rick Santorum or something equally fun?

Put simply, they suck. What do they suck? Cash. Lots of it.

The HRC rakes in something approaching 50 million dollars a year in revenue--their executive director, Joe Salmonellamayonaisemanese pulls in a salary of several hundred grand. What have we gotten out of this bloated carcass? Not a thing worth mentioning and every now and then, they eagerly sell trans people up the river. Seriously, this is an organization that hordes money and does nothing useful. It's a sad, sick dinosaur.

And, ripped establishment LGBT orgs:

Everyone: We know you mean well, but stop giving these idiots your money. Stop putting that equal sticker on your car. Stop going to their lame galas. And for the love of Judy Garland's Ghost and Robert Mapplethorpe's Zombie Bones, stop saying "It Gets Better" and hoping for a miracle from up on high. We don't expect you to riot (although we swear you'll love it once you get going!) but it's time for us to quit with the passivity, move to action, build community and care for each other instead of hoping the Gay Non-Profit Industrial Complex will ever get anything done.

Said HRC's Michael Cole to the Blade: "It's unfortunate that after a marriage win in New York that represented an unprecedented coming together of LGBT groups, some are more interested in fostering division in the community."

Rhode Island Senate Passes Civil Union Bill 21-16

via Towleroad News #gay by Andy Towle on 6/29/11

UPDATE: Rhode Island Senate has passed the civil union bill 21-16. It's now headed to Governor Lincoln Chafee's desk. Chafee has promised to sign it despite a letter from LGBT advocacy groups asking him to veto. See below.

Earlier...

Rhode Island's civil union bill passed out of the Senate Judiciary Committee Wednesday afternoon:

Ri With Senate President M. Teresa Paiva Weed calling it "a historic day," the Senate Judiciary Committee voted 7 to 4 Wednesday to recommend passage of a bill that legalizes same-sex civil unions.

The bill, which establishes marriage-like rights for people joined in civil unions, was expected to go before the full Senate as early as Wednesday evening.

Paiva Weed, who joined the committee for its meeting and voted for passage, called the bill "a compromise."

Lawmakers are expected to approve the bill:

Gov. Lincoln Chaffe, an independent, is expected to sign the bill into law should it pass the Democrat-controlled Senate, according to his spokesman, Michael Trainor.

But the controversial measure also drew sharp criticism from religious leaders and other opposition groups who say it would lead to court-ordered action that would eventually legalize same-sex marriage.

Many LGBT advocacy groups are calling on Chafee to veto the bill:

In a two-page letter sent to the governor, the groups said the bill — scheduled for a Senate Judiciary Committee vote on Wednesday afternoon — "represents a huge step backward from Rhode Island's longstanding nondiscrimination commitments" and provides "individuals and institutions a free-floating license to discriminate against a whole class of people, in defiance of general law."

"This amendment could allow individuals, who are legally required to recognize everyone else's legal commitments, to opt out of doing so only for gay and lesbian people," the groups wrote. "In practical terms, this law could allow religiously affiliated hospitals to deny a civil union's spouse's right to be by his spouse's side and make medical decisions for him."

The groups that signed the letter included Marriage Equality Rhode Island, Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders, the National Center for Lesbian Rights, Freedom to Marry and the American Civil Liberties Union.

Gay Couple Spared Deportation

JOSH AND HENRY X390 (GETEQUAL JONATHAN YSTAD) | ADVOCATE.COM
Federal officials have canceled the deportation of Henry Velandia, a Venezuelan married to the American citizen Josh Vandiver, in a decision that could have extensive implications for immigration policy affecting same-sex couples.
The New York Timesreports on the deportation cancellation that was announced Wednesday by Lavi Soloway, the lawyer for Velandia and Vandiver, who live in New Jersey and were married in Connecticut last year.
“The case has been closely watched across the country by lawyers and advocates who viewed it as a test of the federal government’s position on the Defense of Marriage Act, a federal law that bars the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages,” reports the Times.
The Obama administration announced that it would no longer defend DOMA in the courts in February, but it said it would continue to enforce the law. Advocates had asked the administration to postpone deportations for same-sex married couples until the constitutionality of DOMA was settled.
An immigration judge in Newark suspended deportation for Velandia last month the same day a protest was held outside the federal building. The judge wanted to allow the government more time to consider the issue, and earlier this month, Soloway received a call from an arm of the Homeland Security Department saying that the agency agreed with his request to close the deportation proceedings, the Times reports.
While the decision could lead to the cancellation of other deportation proceedings against immigrants in same-sex marriages, it does not settle the question of federal recognition for same-sex marriages.

Theron added that her long-held views are not hinged on the fact that her parents had a rocky relationship, but because she had always felt that inequality was wrong.

NHL Player Fires Agent Over Antigay Remarks

TODD REYNOLDS (INSET)ANDREW BURNETTE X390 (BURNETTE: GETTY) | ADVOCATE.COM
Minnesota Wild forward Andrew Brunette, 37, has fired NHL agent Todd Reynolds, an outspoken opponent of same-sex marriage who recently made antigay remarks, according to  Sporting News.
Brunette, who cited the controversial comments as the reason for the drop, has replaced Reynolds with agent Don Baizely
New York Rangers forward Sean Avery declared his support of marriage equality in May, which prompted Reynolds to proclaimthat it is “very sad to read Sean Avery’s misguided support of same-gender ‘marriage.’ Legal or not, it will always be wrong.”
Reynolds also touted his stance on the issue from his Twitter account, in addition to an interview with TSN 1050, a sports talk radio station in Canada.
During the 2010-2011 season, Brunette, a potential unrestricted free agent for the upcoming season, had 18 goals and 28 assists for Minnesota.

NASCAR Crewman Fired Over Antigay Tweet

JEREMY FULLER RED BULL NASCAR X390 (FB FAIR) | ADVOCATE.COM
Jeremy Fuller (pictured), a tire changer for a NASCAR team known as Red Bull Racing, was canned after he tweeted at least one antigay message.
While in San Francisco on Sunday, Fuller tweeted a picture of a gay pride banner and wrote, "This is way [sic] I don't live here!" A follower of his tweeted back, "If we could get rid of them, it'd be a lot better." Fuller appeared to respond to that tweet with "lol... Don't we all wish!" After Red Bull Racing became aware of the conversation and fired Fuller, he denied sending the last message.
"It was a joke between two friends and it cost me both of my jobs," Fuller toldSceneDaily.com, a NASCAR news site, referring to his jobs changing tires for both Red Bull Racing and Turner Motorsports. "I'm not racist and I do not hate gay people. It wasn't intended to be what [it appeared]... I didn't write anything about getting rid of them or 'ha ha' or 'laughing out loud.'"
NASCAR's code of conduct bars employees from making public statements disparaging another person's race, color, creed, national origin, marital status, religion, age, handicap, or sexual orientation. A NASCAR statement said the racing organization has "zero tolerance" for discrimination and does not support Fuller's tweets.
The gay NASCAR blog Queers4Gears first broke the story.

San Diego Catholic Church Denies Funeral to Gay Man

via Towleroad News #gay by Andy Towle on 6/29/11

A Catholic Church in San Diego denied a funeral to one of its longtime parishioners because he was gay, 10 News reports:

Sanfilippo Local businessman and devout Catholic John Sanfilippo died last week after struggling with emphysema. Friends said Sanfilippo planned for the funeral mass to be held at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church in Little Italy, where Sanfilippo had attended for decades. Friends said he even left the church a large sum of money in his will.

This past weekend, Sanfilippo's partner of 28 years and Sanfilippo's family were notified that the church canceled the funeral because Sanfilippo was gay.

And, apparently after outrage and some attention, the church has changed its mind:

In an email, Rodrigo Valdivia, the chancellor of the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego, told 10News, "The Diocesan office was notified about this situation earlier today... Diocesan Authorities have concluded that the funeral as scheduled at Our Lady of the Rosary Parish may take place. Plans for the ritual are yet to be made."

At the cocktail lounge that Sanfilippo owned for 28 years came outrage from friends over what some called a confusing statement from the San Diego diocese.

"All of a sudden, they change their mind and say, 'Well, you know, we may still allow the funeral to be here.' Why? Because they got caught in the process of denying equal rights to people?" asked Neil Thomas, a friend and customer of Sanfilippo's.

MASSACHUSETTS: Nine Charged With Hate Crimes In Bashing Of Gay Man

via Joe. My. God. by Joe on 6/29/11

Nine Springfield, Massachusetts youths have been charged with hate crimes in the beating of an openly gay man.
Sgt. John Delaney said the beating occurred shortly after 3 a.m. Tuesday as the 30-year-old victim walked down a Springfield street. Delaney said the victim told police he was then attacked by the suspects who knocked him to the ground, kicked him in the head and abdomen and punched him in the face with closed fists. He said the females in the group encouraged the males to beat up the victim and others yelled disparaging remarks about the victim's sexual orientation during the attack.
MassLive.com has more.
The victim and the people accused of attacking him all live in the same neighborhood. While none of the suspects knew the victim by name, they were familiar with him from the neighborhood, police said. The victim told police that a group of youths inside Barrows Park yelled and asked him to come inside the park, said Delaney, aide to Police Commissioner William J. Fitchet. The victim kept walking and told police he was then attacked, knocked him to the ground, kicked him in the head and abdomen and punched him in the face with closed fists, Delaney said. "During the beating, the females encouraged the males to beat up the victim," Delaney said. He said all yelled remarks disparaging about what they believed to be the victim's sexual orientation.
The victim was released from the hospital after being treated for head trauma and facial lacerations.

Nine Teens Arrested in Beating of Gay Man in Massachusetts

via Towleroad News #gay by Andy Towle on 6/28/11

Nine teens from the ages of 12-19 have been arrested for the beating and robbery of a gay man this morning, WWLP reports:

Springfield According to Springfield Police Sergeant John Delaney, Shay Andre Edwards (pictured), 19, of Springfield was arrested on charges of unarmed robbery and violation of civil rights with injury. Four other teen boys and four teen girls have are also facing the same crimes in connection with the attack. Their identities are not being released because they are underage. Delaney says the attackers ranged in age from 12 to 19 years old.

According to Delaney, before 3:00 Tuesday morning, the group saw the 30 year-old man walking by Barrows Park. They called out to the man, telling him to enter the park, but he kept walking. That was when they allegedly knocked him to the ground. The male teens punched him in the face and kicked him in the head and stomach, while the females of the group cheered them on. All the while, the group members allegedly yelled out anti-gay slurs. The group allegedly took his MP3 player before running off.

The Republican adds:

"During the beating, the females encouraged the males to beat up the victim," Delaney said. "All the participants yelled disparaging about the victims sexual orientation during the attack."

After the beat, the victim called police from a home on Eastern Avenue.

A short time later, officers Luis Adames and Herman Little spotted the suspects in front of 600 State St., less than a quarter-mile from the attack. One of the suspects, a juvenile, had the MP3 player in his possession, Delaney said.

The victim suffered head trauma and other injuries, according to the paper. The teens have been charged with unarmed robbery and civil rights violation with injury, and the attack has been determined to be a hate crime.

White House: Michelle Obama Has Made No Public Statements with Regard to Same-Sex Marriage

via Towleroad News #gay by Andy Towle on 6/28/11

Michelle Obama's office has released a statement clarifying the First Lady's position on same-sex marriage after many news outlets suggested that comments made by former NJ Governor James McGreevey offered some insight into her position.

Obamas Said McGreevey: "If only [Barack Obama] would listen to Michelle more often."

The President, of course, has been under pressure in recent days for refusing to "evolve" on the same-sex marriage.

The First Lady's office makes it clear she has no immediate plans to contradict that, and never has:

"Mrs. Obama has never made any public statements about same-sex marriage," her communications director, Kristina Schake, said in an email to POLITICO.

Arkansas Newspaper Rebuffs GLAAD, Revokes Apology to Gay Man Left Out of Partner's Obituary

via Towleroad News #gay by Andy Towle on 6/28/11

Last week, GLAAD secured a commitment from Arkansas newspaper The Batesville Daily Guard to apologize to Terrance James, the surviving 10-year partner of a gay man for omitting him from his late partner's obituary. The paper also promised to re-run the obituary with James' name in it.

James Late last week, the paper completely reversed its commitment, claiming that James has an "agenda". Blue Arkansas has more on James and his battle.

Wrote the paper, in part, in an editorial Friday:

It was brought to our attention Terence James had a problem with our policy because he was not listed in the free obituary as a life partner. Once again, free obituaries do not list life partners or significant others, nor does it list in-laws or ex-spouses...

...After obtaining a copy of the paperwork filled out by Mr. James at the funeral home, we learned he listed two cats as daughters and a dog as a son. Once again, Mr. James was told by the director the Guard does not list pets as survivors in a free obituary.

We deal with the death of loved ones on a daily basis and our established policy allows us to do that with consistency. Listing pets as children is a direct slap in the face to every grieving parent who has buried a child, young or old.

This begs the question of exactly what motive Mr. James had when he began giving out false information to news channels and various organizations in order to promote his own agenda.

Because of Mr. James, the Guard has come under fire for the policies that are in place for everyone.

GLAAD wrote:

Today, the paper has completely hardened on that stance, insisting that excluding a surviving partner of ten years is justifiable.  At GLAAD, we completely disagree.  Excluding a grieving partner from recognition is cruel and insensitive.  It's wrong.

GLAAD got involved on Wednesday, after reading about the incident on Queerty. That afternoon, we contacted the Guard's spokesperson/attorney Oscar Jones to see what could be done, and he expressed what we understood to be sincere sympathy. He offered us a direct promise that the policy was in the process of changing, and the paper would meet next week to formalize changes to recognize surviving partners without a marriage certificate. He also expressed an interest in apologizing to Terrance James directly. On Thursday, we reached out to Terrance and told him what Oscar, acting as the paper's spokesperson, told us. Terrance said he would like to hear from the paper, so we called Oscar to pass along his contact information. At this point, Oscar offered to run a paid obituary, written however Terrance would like it written, and said the paper would donate the fee for the obituary to the charity of Terrance's choosing, in the memory of his partner. We offered to pay for the obituary.

Little Rock LGBT Rights group Center for Artistic Revolution is reportedly planning a community vigil for James.

Reuters reports:

Now the protests are going forward, and the central figure in the controversy, the gay life partner of a man who died from spinal meningitis, is threatening legal action from a hospital bed.

"I want a hundred times more now than I did at the beginning of all of this, which was just to have my name listed," Terence James told Reuters on Monday. James has been diagnosed with the same illness that killed his partner, John Millican, on June 11.

Oscar Jones, the newspaper's attorney, told Reuters on Monday that the policy was still being reviewed and that it was "a process," not something they could do overnight. "That's a process as opposed to just not a decision immediately," Jones said. "I anticipate changes in the policy but I don't know what those will be yet."

GLAAD adds:

Please contact the publisher and let her know that the paper does in fact owe Mr. James an apology, and should re-run the obituary, including recognition of the surviving partner:

Hate Group Leader Tony Perkins Condemns the Empire State Building's Rainbow Show of Pride

via Towleroad News #gay by Andy Towle on 6/28/11

Tony Perkins, leader of the hate group Family Research Council, is not happy that the Empire State Building lit up in rainbow colors on Friday night following the marriage equality victory in NY.

Writes Perkins, in part:

Empire People at the Empire State Building said it was a coincidence. Officials explained that it takes hours to change the lights. But there was no mistaking the message Friday night when the highest point in the city lit up like a towering rainbow, its colors blazing across the New York skyline. Like a warning flare, the reds and blues and greens exploded over the city, announcing the arrival of same-sex "marriage" to the world. Overnight, New York had become a beacon in the fight for family--a symbol of people who had lost their way...

When the law goes into effect next month, New York will be the sixth and largest state to shatter the definition of marriage in America. To understand the devastation of that defeat, consider this. Within hours, the number of people living in jurisdictions with same-sex "marriage" doubled.

...Despite all of the disappointment, God is on the move. Regardless of how things appear, never doubt that He is at work behind the scenes. Rainbow colors may cut through the New York night, but shadows are where you and I are called to shine. The world takes advantage of the darkness, but only the church can set it ablaze. "Arise... for your light has come... See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the Lord rises upon you and His glory appears over you. Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn." (Isaiah 60:1-3)

The Family Research Council has been designated a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Pentagon Confirms Three More Discharges Under 'DADT'

via Towleroad News #gay by Andy Towle on 6/27/11

Earlier this month we learned about the first, and at that time only discharge under "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" since Obama signed repeal legislation. There have been three more discharges of service members who have identified themselves as gay and asked to be discharged expeditiously before repeal takes effect, the Advocate reports:

Dadt "A total of four airmen have been discharged under the policy in the last several weeks, Pentagon spokeswoman Eileen Lainez confirmed Monday...Air Force spokesman Maj. Joel Harper told The Advocate that the discharges of three additional service members — two female staff sergeants and one male second lieutenant— have been approved since an April 29 discharge."

Said Alexander Nicholson, Executive Director of Servicemembers United, in a statement responding to the discharges:

"It is rather shocking that we continue to see isolated incidents of servicemembers trying to force the Pentagon to let them out of their service obligations because the 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' law still technically remains on the books. The Pentagon has made it abundantly clear that it does not want to enforce 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' any longer and that it is more than willing to deal with any lingering harassment issues through the chain of command or, in the case of command involvement, the base's or post's Inspector General's office. Thousands of servicemembers have dreamed of the day when 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' would be virtually dead and commands would plead with openly gay servicemembers to remain in the service. It really would behoove the Defense Department to expedite certification so that no one can use this archaic law as a loophole to leave the military early anymore."

Sarvis SLDN executive director Aubrey Sarvis released a statement as well:

"These Air Force discharges underscore that DADT investigations and discharges continue. Unfortunately, SLDN has a client right now who was recently recommended for discharge at a board hearing, and his paperwork is headed to the Navy Secretary. He made no statement, and he wants to continue serving. We have another client who is having a board hearing later this week, and if this senior enlisted person is recommended for discharge, her paperwork will likely be before the Navy Secretary in short order. She, too, wishes to continue serving. Let me be clear. At SLDN, we have scores of clients who have been advised they are under DADT investigations. Some of these clients have between 10 and 15 years of honorable service, few made voluntary statements, and none to my knowledge has asked to be 'separated expeditiously.' For these service members, especially, certification and final repeal cannot come soon enough. The continued stress of investigations and the risk of separation under DADT is real and very much imminent."

Training has been underway for 'DADT' repeal for several months now. Last Friday was the deadline for final assessments on the progress of the training. The reports will generate final recommendations which the defense secretary and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Mike Mullen must review before certifying final repeal. It was reported last week that Gates, who is retiring at the end of this week, would leave certification to his successor Leon Panetta.

Assholery After Seattle Pride

via Joe. My. God. by Joe on 6/27/11

According to KOMO television, several hundred so-called "anarchists" rampaged through the streets of Seattle last night in an action that some said was in protest of the commercialization of gay Pride. Police cars and storefronts were destroyed by rock-throwers.
Several hundred people swarmed through the Capitol Hill area overnight, noisily vandalizing stores and smashing windows before dispersing into the darkness. Police say the drama began shortly after midnight Sunday when a flash mob gathered, passing out flyers, during a dance party. But the mob soon went out of control, creating havoc, said Renee Witt of the Seattle Police Department. The mob marched down 12th Avenue and Broadway, yelling and chanting. Some carried rainbow flags, while others carried red-and-black flags and wore masks.

Eventually some people started smashing store windows, damaging property, spray-painting slogans and bashing in the windshield of a patrol car. "It was just a walk down the street - it was a dance party down the street - and some idiot started throwing things," said one young woman who was there. Some people in the group, described as anarchists, apparently chose to use Gay Pride Weekend to send to message of protest - upset at how much gay pride is now part of the commercial mainstream. "There are some anarchists, gay activists, that don't want to be assimilated into capitalists' culture, and they feel like they're being exploited by companies like American Apparel," said Endresen Evans, who lives on Capitol Hill. That's why it appears protesters specifically targeted the store. A rock was thrown through the window and then vandalized with black spray paint.
Other say the melee had nothing to do with gay Pride at all and that only a handful of those on the street were with the group of "anarchists."

It's National HIV Testing Day

via Joe. My. God. by Joe on 6/27/11

So notes the Centers for Disease Control:
The majority of the estimated 56,000 new HIV infections that occur each year are transmitted by those who are unaware of their infection. Effective HIV treatments now allow people living with HIV to live long, productive lives, yet nearly 17,000 people with AIDS still die every year in the United States. Despite these troubling statistics, the majority of Americans have still never taken an HIV test. Many people don't recognize that they're at risk for HIV infection, even if they engage in behaviors that put them at risk. Others may fear what a positive diagnosis could mean for them, despite the effective treatments now available. And many people don't yet realize that testing today is quick, easy and confidential. On this National HIV Testing Day, don't let fear or misinformation stop you from getting tested. I strongly encourage all Americans to get tested for HIV, and to text and tweet hivtest.org to your friends and family to encourage them to do the same. HIV testing is the critical first step to protect yourself and your loved ones from HIV, and to help end the HIV epidemic in the United States.
In addition to the LGBT community health centers, there are many locations in New York City which offer rapid same-day HIV testing. Know your status.

CHICAGO: Thirty Gay Pride Floats Discoverd With Slashed Tires

via Joe. My. God. by Joe on 6/26/11

The management of a company that provides floats to Chicago Pride arrived this morning to find dozens of slashed tires.
Chuck Huser, owner of long-time Pride float provider Assocated Attractions at 4834 S. Halsted on Chicago's South Side, said the floats were fine when he left 8 p.m. Saturday night, but when he returned 5 a.m. Sunday to start preparation for drivers to depart, he found two tires punctured each on more than 30 floats. "This is catastrophic," he told Windy City Times at 8 a.m. June 26. "This has never happened before, and we have been doing this since 1989." The attackers broken in but did no other damage to the floats, and they took nothing else, leaving Huser to believe this had to be a hate crime. No notes were left. Huser has filed a police report, but his main focus the morning of the Pride Parade was finding an open tire shop, where they were running back and forth to repair the tires.

NOH8 Campaign - Newsletter: NY Senate Approves Marriage Equality!

In a historic vote, the New York Senate has voted 33-29 to pass a state bill (Bill 5045) legalizing same-sex marriage. The bill contains critical protections for the rights of religious and not-for-profit institutions, which means that these institutions are free to perform or not perform ceremonies as they see fit. As we continue to fight against discrimination in pursuit of equal rights for all people, the NOH8 Campaign celebrates this victory for the LGBT Community!

A young boy we met in Atlanta earlier this year proudly poses with his mothers' Marriage Certificate for his photo. His parents had gotten married in California during its brief legalization in 2008.

Senator Mark Grisanti of Buffalo, NY, who had previously been reported as being undecided in his vote, gave an incredibly poignant speech before delivering his vote in favor of the bill. He spoke about how doing the research and reflecting on previous comments he'd made to the contrary, he had come to the conclusion there was absolutely no reason he could cite for him to be able to deny the same rights he shares with his wife to same-sex couples.

"A man can be wiser today than yesterday," Senator Grisanti said.

We celebrate with our friends and supporters in New York this evening, and hope this progress is a sign of many good things to come as this incredible year for LGBT rights continues.

Let us all continue the momentum -- BE HEARD!
