More Info	On SUNDAY, MAY 22nd the NOH8 Campaign will set up our studio at the W Austin, opening up the opportunity to join the campaign to all the NOH8 supporters in the Texas area! The photo shoot on Sunday is scheduled to begin at 12PM and end at 4PM. We will do our best to make sure that everyone in line by 4PM will get their photo! Anyone that would like to join the NOH8 Campaign is asked to wear a plain white shirt to match the look of the signature NOH8 photos. Solo NOH8 photos will require a fee of $40 per person while any group or couple photos will require a $25 fee per person in the photo. Adam Bouska will be working around the clock to photograph 5-10 frames for each person that comes through. Fact: According to information compiled by the Texas School Safety Center at Texas State University - San Marcos, there have been four bullying-related suicides of Texas students since the 2009 Legislative Session when lawmakers also failed to pass meaningful legislation.

Urgent Legislative Update, ArtErotica and Serve Our City results, and the Ride this Saturday

Providing HIV and AIDS care and prevention education since 1987! David, This spring season holds the promise of great things to come, mixed with a few legislative challenges. Thank You First, we have two huge reasons to give thanks: The Octopus Club just announced the proceeds from ArtErotica: a record-breaking $73,000 for the Paul Kirby Emergency Fund at ASA! Our appreciation goes to the all-volunteer Octopus Club members, with a special shout out to ArtErotica co-chairs Tim Young and Scott Ballew! We also thank the Serve Our City organizers. Congregants raised a substantial $31,000 for ASA on Good Friday. We especially thank Lead Pastor Randy Phillips of PromiseLand West for organizing the services and to Pastor Gaylon Clark of Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church for being an outspoken and compassionate advocate for the local faces of AIDS. Legislative Update The full funding of the Texas HIV Medication Program is still uncertain. The Senate budget bill has been voted out of the Senate Finance Committee, and is expected to head to the floor for debate as early as tomorrow or the middle of next week.  As of now, the $19.2 million needed to serve the approximately 2,000 individuals living with HIV and AIDS that would otherwise have to go without medication is included in the Senate budget. It is not guaranteed that it will remain in the budget! Please click on this link and enter your information for a fax to be sent to your State Senator asking them to support the $19.2 million needed to fully fund the Texas HIV Medication Program. While the Senate Finance Committee approved the $19.2M needed to keep this program - which should be a moral imperative for our state - the House decided that the life-saving program is not a priority. We are waiting on the full Senate to vote on the budget. If the Senate passes the budget with the $19.2M intact, then we will be asking you to lobby the as-yet unannounced members of the conference committee. In the meantime, there is some encouraging news out of the House: HB 2229, which passed today in a vote of 88-57, would permanently establish the Texas HIV Medication Program Advisory Committee, and not allow it to sunset or be disbanded, whether by oversight or otherwise. Our appreciation goes to each representative who voted in favor of the bill, including sponsoring Representatives Coleman, Naishtat and Marquez. The bill now goes up for a vote in the Senate. Hill Country Ride for AIDS on Saturday With so much uncertainty in the state budget, there is even more reason (if you needed it) to ride in this Saturday's Hill Country Ride for AIDS! Volunteers and donations are still needed (We are just 19% away from the $500,000 goal!). A worker in action at ASA's future home for our expanded HIV Prevention program. You may register to ride or to volunteer online. You can also make a general donation or donate to Team ASA.  Riders and volunteers provide life saving support for thousands of Central Texans living with HIV and AIDS by raising money for 10 local nonprofit organizations. It's a Ride, not a race, and all levels are welcomed and celebrated. Out Youth's Big Adventure Weekend

The Hill Country Ride for AIDS is this weekend! Out Youth is honored to be one of 10 local organizations that benefit from The Ride. Riders and volunteers provide life saving support for thousands of Central Texans living with HIV/AIDS. Last year we started K.Y.S.S. (Knowing Your Status is Smart) where we offer free HIV testing for 14-23 year olds on Mondays from 4:30-6:30 pm. The Out Youth Team has more riders than ever. Seven of our riders are youth and most are first-time riders. We're also having our first HCRA Camp Out this weekend. The first of its kind, the 2011 HCRA Camp Out Youth promises to provide a unique opportunity for new skill building, deepening friendships, and experiencing the great outdoors. The youth who are riding will join the Camp Out that night, and the campers can all support the Riders and experience the Closing Ceremonies. Here are some ways you can help with Camp Out Youth and The Ride: we still need a few sleeping bags, ground pads, and tents, donate to the Camp Out: $300 will cover costs for 20 youth and 10 adult volunteers/chaperones, we still need a few bike helmets, and donate to youth riders' fundraising efforts: Joey, John, Oliver, Megan, Joseph, Benjamin, and Pele. Workplace News: DOMA Defense Heats Up

King & Spalding Drops DOMA Monday saw a victory for LGBT equality as law firm King & Spalding announced that they would withdraw their role in defending the Defense of Marriage Act on behalf of the U.S. House of Representative. Paul Clement, a partner at King & Spalding, was tasked to lead the defense, but the firm's Chairman Robert Hays decided that the engagement had not been properly vetted, and would be filing a motion to withdraw from the case. Questions arose when King & Spalding took on the defense of DOMA, especially considering its touting of a 95 percent on HRC's Corporate Equality Index, and an articulated firm-wide commitment to LGBT diversity. We are pleased to see that King & Spalding has decided to stand on the right side of history and remain true to its core values. Read more about King & Spalding's decision on HRC's Back Story here» Hawaii Legislature Passes Transgender Employment Protections Last week, by a 45-4 vote, the Hawaii House concurred with the Senate on a HB 546 SD1, a bill codifying prohibitions against discrimination in employment on the basis of gender identity.  The bill now heads to Governor Abercrombie, who has said he will sign it into law.  Upon Governor's signature, Hawaii will join 12 states and the District of Columbia in banning discrimination on the basis of gender identity in employment, housing and public accommodations. HRC worked closely with Equality Hawaii to build both public and legislative support for this legislation. Through this joint effort, thousands of phone calls, emails and handwritten letters were sent to legislators urging them to approve this legislation. Read more about this exciting vote on HRC's Back Story here» Dream Jobs Align with LGBT Inclusion Practices Universum recently conducted a survey of 10,306 young professionals (as defined as college graduates with one to eight years of work experience) to pick their ideal employers from a list of 150 candidates. Of the top ten most ideal employers for the youngest workers, five were ranked in the 2011 Corporate Equality Index. Four of those five received a 100%, designated a Best Place to Work for LGBT Equality, and the other received a 95% Ideal employers it seems also happen to do right by their LGBT employees. These inclusive policies and practice may contribute to their attractiveness to the young workforce. Surprisingly, this same group of young professionals are the least likely to be open in the workplace. According to Degrees of Equality, only 5% of LGBT employees ages 18 to 24 say they are totally open at work. They say they are not open to everyone at work because they are worried about adversely affecting relationships with new coworkers, many of whom are older and might be perceived as less accepting. The top reason 18 to 24 year olds are not open at work is they do not want to make people feel uncomfortable (65%).
