One Million Moms posted the following email:
Recently Macy's Department store mailed its newest catalogue out to many Americans. In the hopes of making sales, instead they offended many customers in the process. The back cover looks like just a regular advertisement for their wedding registry service, but there is one major difference.

When you take a closer look you see the cake topper of two men instead of the traditional man and woman. The ad also includes a license plate that reads "I do" and hearts scattered everywhere. Macy's must believe this is mainstream, but just because gay marriage is legal in a few states, this is inappropriate marketing and conservative customers will not support it.

TAKE ACTION

Please send Macy's an email letter below asking that they discontinue their "two groom" advertisement. Many of our supporters have already spoken up concerning Macy's policy on transgender men allowed into women's dressing rooms, and we will continue to speak out on traditional values. Some of our members have reported that they requested that their Macy's store credit card account be closed and shared the reason behind their decision. During our last campaign, we did not receive a reply from Macy's, but this does not mean that we will give up.

Please contact Macy's and let them know we are PROUD of their ad, and we will continue to shop at Macy's!!!!

Etta James Passes Away At 73

Very sad news to pass along today. Legendary singer Etta James has passed away due to complications from her ailing health. We’ve been hearing for a couple of months now that Etta was not doing well. The singer, who was diagnosed with leukemia back in 2010 and also suffered from dementia, was in and out of the hospital in the past year. I understand that Etta was allowed to be home for the New Year at the start of this month but, unfortunately, she did succumb to her failing health. Some of you young’ns may not be too familiar with Etta James but you might recall that Beyoncé played Etta in the 2008 film Cadillac Records and many of you are definitely familiar with her biggest hit song At Last (which Beyoncé performed at the inauguration of President Obama back in 2009.

Etta James, whose assertive, earthy voice lit up such hits as “The Wallflower” “Something’s Got a Hold on Me” and the wedding favorite “At Last,” has died, according to her longtime friend and manager, Lupe De Leon. She was 73 and had been diagnosed with leukemia in 2010. James, who also suffered from dementia and hepatitis C, died at a hopsital in Riverside, California. The powerhouse singer, known as “Miss Peaches,” lived an eventful life. She first hit the charts as a teenager, taking “The Wallflower (Roll With Me, Henry)” — an “answer record” to Hank Ballard’s “Work With Me, Annie” — to No. 1 on the R&B charts in 1955. She joined Chess Records in 1960 and had a string of R&B and pop hits, many with lush string arrangements. After a mid-decade fade, she re-emerged in 1967 with a more hard-edged, soulful sound. Throughout her career, James overcame a heroin addiction, opened for the Rolling Stones, won six Grammys and was voted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Despite her ups and downs — including a number of health problems — she maintained an optimistic attitude. “Most of the songs I sing, they have that blue feeling to it. They have that sorry feeling. And I don’t know what I’m sorry about,” she told CNN’s Denise Quan in 2002. “I don’t!” Through it all, she was a spitfire beloved by contemporaries and young up-and-comers. “Etta James is unmanageable, and I’m the closest thing she’s ever had to a manager,” Lupe DeLeon, her manager of 30-plus years, told CNN in admiration. British songstress Adele named James as one of her favorite singers, along with Aretha Franklin. “If you were to look up the word singer in the dictionary, you’d see their names,” Adele said in an interview. Etta James was born Jamesetta Hawkins in Los Angeles to a teen mother and unknown father. (She suspected her father was the pool player Minnesota Fats.) Her birth mother initially took little responsibility and James was raised by a series of people, notably a pair of boardinghouse owners. But she was recognized from a young age for her booming voice, showcased in a South Central Los Angeles church. In 1950, her mother took her to San Francisco, where James formed a group called the Peaches. Singer Johnny Otis, best known for “Willie and the Hand Jive,” discovered her and had her sing a song he wrote using Ballard’s tune as a model. “The Wallflower,” with responses from “Louie Louie” songwriter Richard Berry, made James an R&B star. Her signing to Chess introduced her to a broader audience, as the record label’s co-owner, Leonard Chess, believed she should do pop hits. Among her recordings were “Stormy Weather,” the Lena Horne classic originally from 1933; “A Sunday Kind of Love,” which dates from 1946; and most notably, “At Last,” a 1941 number that was originally a hit for Glenn Miller. James’ version of “At Last” starts out with swooning strings and the singer enters with confident gusto, dazzlingly maintaining a mood of joy and romance. Though the song failed to make the Top 40 upon its 1961 release — though it did hit the R&B Top 10 — its emotional punch has long made it a favorite at weddings.

Popout

Over the years, James had her share of health problems. In the late 1990s she reportedly weighed more than 400 pounds and required a scooter to get around. In 2003 she had gastric bypass surgery and dropped more than half the weight, according to People magazine. However, until her latest issues, James maintained a steady touring schedule and appeared full of energy even when sitting down — as she sometimes did on stage, due to bad knees and her weight battles. Even while sitting down, James gave it her all on stage, singing as though possessed, caressing every note like a long-lost love. If that seemed a little much to critics, well, the legendary singer had a show to put on, she told Quan. “They said that Etta James is still vulgar,” she said in the 2002 interview. “I said, ‘Oh, how dare ‘em say I’m still real vulgar! I’m vulgar because I dance in the chair?’ What would they want me to do? Want me to just be still or something like that?
“I gotta do something.”
Etta James was as real as they come … there will never be another to replace her. It’s hard to think of the right things to say about the passing of a legend … because words just don’t seem to do the loss justice. Etta Jameslived a difficult life but she managed to persevere and use her talent to find success. You can hear the pain that she has known in her voice … and as sad as it sounds, it is her use of that pain that made her a star. It’s sad to think of Etta suffering at the end of her life … but I hope that she was able to find peace in her home in the days leading up to her death. Etta James is a true icon and she will never be forgotten. Rest well, Etta … we can never truly thank you for all you have given us.

Katy Perry Is Now A Sims Character

We found out yesterday via a press release by Electronic Arts Inc that Katy Perry has signed a deal to collaborate with The Sims Studio to develop special Katy Perry themed games, kicking off with a special Collector’s Edition launching in March. So, Katy is going to be a Sim person…

I’m not the biggest Katy Perry fan out there, I like her, but I don’t lurrrve her, and I have to admit I am not the biggest Sim fan either, but yet both of them together, and I’m hooked… I have to know why???
The press release explains all the details about the new venture and why the games studio chose to work with Katy. Apparently they think that “no performer could better represent the humor and fun of The Sims brand.” She has already worked with the studio in the past recording her song, ‘Hot and Cold’ to feature in their Sim2 series.
“Today marks the start of the most integrated and exciting collaboration with any artist in the history of The Sims,” said Steve Schnur, Worldwide Executive of Music for EA. “Katy Perry has been a fan of The Sims for several years, and her Simlish recording of her hit ‘Hot and Cold’ featured in The Sims™2 series quickly became the most popular Simlish music video to date. We couldn’t be more excited to work with Katy and bring her distinctive talents, style and personality to the franchise’s global fan base.
“I love how you’re able to play out different stories through your Sims characters – giving them different careers and watching them succeed,” said Perry. “It’s cool to see the Sims’ stage performances in The Sims 3 Showtime decked out just like my California Dreams Tour – even my cotton candy video screens are in there! I always like to think of myself as a cartoon, and now I’m a Sim!”
In The Sims 3 Showtime, the latest expansion pack to the critically-acclaimed The Sims 3, players can venture into a new world and play out a rags-to-riches story with their Sims as they become superstar singers, acrobats and magicians, or even moonlight as a DJ. Players can watch their Sims rise to fame – or go down in flames – as they perform on stage in front of cheering crowds in all new venues. On the way to the top, players will have more tools to tell their Sims’ stories the way they want to including the ability to customize stages, create Sims with all-new clothing options, traits, skills and lifetime wishes and interact with objects like the new pool table, karaoke machine and mechanical bull.

So as I understand the new edition, you can play out characters this time that are musicians, stars, magicians and DJs, which is why they have a Katy person. The Katy Perry Collector’s Edition is officially launched in March but you can pre-order… guess they are expecting a big response for the new game series?

There will be Katy accessories, Katy clothing, Katy hairstyles, furniture and props in the Sims games that will aim to embody Katy’s performances, music videos and life. It is a little bit scary to me, but I suppose people have themselves made into Barbie dolls and the like all the time. I would just find it very surreal to see myself in animation.
Katy will also be featured in their TV advertising campaigns and all their marketing paraphernalia obviously. So clearly this is a big money win and extra PR for Katy. I guess she kind of has a cartoon caricature vibe to her… but will it be good or terribly bad for her career?

Gay California Teen Jeffrey Fehr Kills Himself After Years of 'Pure Hell' Bullying

The Sacramento Bee has yet another awful story of a gay teen whose suicide on New Year's Day appears to have years of homophobic bullying as its root cause.
FehrThe paper reports:
In the early hours of New Year's Day, Jeffrey hanged himself in the front entrance to his family's home in a tony Granite Bay neighborhood. He was 18 years old.

Since that day, his parents have searched their hearts and minds for answers. Though Jeffrey, who was gay, had recently ended a relationship and had been treated for depression, they believe something more insidious put him on the path toward suicide. They are convinced that a lifetime of taunts and bullying contributed to his decision to take his own life.

"We will second-guess ourselves forever," his father said. "But we do know that for years and years, people knocked him down for being different. It damaged him. It wore on him. He could never fully believe how wonderful he was, and how many people loved him."
His parents talked to the paper about a scenario that is all too familiar:
As early as the third grade, Jeffrey was the target of taunts, family members said. He had few friends and felt comfortable only when he was at home or on vacation with people he trusted.

"He would come home from school and cry," said Tyler, 21. "He would say he felt alone, that he wasn't accepted for the things he liked."

It was in the sixth grade that people first started calling him "fag," the Fehrs said.
And sometime after talking to his parents, who were away on a trip, about his relationship that had just ended, and leaving a Facebook update reading "New Years is stupid", Jeffrey hanged himself.

Beach Boys Reuniting With John Stamos

The news at the end of 2011 was that the iconic and historic Beach Boys would be reuniting in time for their 50th anniversary tour. Now we know that joining them will be the Full House star, John Stamos. Surfs up, dudes!
A new album and world tour, starting off with the New Orleans Jazz festival in April…wow,The Beach Boys have this old-school appeal, but I always get nervous about historic reunions. Will this one work?

“This anniversary is special to me because I miss the boys and it will be a thrill for me to make a new record and be on stage with them again,” Brian Wilson states in a press release.
When a “historic band reunion” announcement was promised for the Grammys Nomination concert, rumor had it that the Beach Boys might be the “iconic group” in question. That announcement never happened, but the Beach Boys are getting back together anyway — they just announced a new album and a world tour (kicking off at the New Orleans Jazz Fest in April) to commemorate their 50th anniversary. Even Brian Wilson signed up!
Brian Wilson and John Stamos…I love the idea of commemorations and anniversaries of iconic moments in time, especially when there is so much history, for us and for them. It is very sweet that the band members themselves are so excited. I’m sure it is a very special thing for someone on the inside, especially if there are fond memories and the opportunity to reconnect with old friends…there was talk of them performing at the Grammy’s on February 12th but no announcement has been made yet. I think it would be pretty fun so if that goes ahead we will be able to tell for ourselves whether this was a good idea or doomed from the start.

Mass Dolphin Beaching In Cape Cod

Picture 37Last night, the AP reported that up to 30 dolphins spontaneously beached themselves on Cape Cod last night:
Kerry Branon of the International Fund for Animal Welfare says the common dolphins were found in Dennis, Brewster, Orleans, Eastham and Wellfleet on Saturday. She says of the 28 to 30 dolphins found, 10 to 12 have died and eight were inaccessible to rescuers.
There was no obvious reason for the beaching. Researchers took blood samples from the dolphins they were able to release. The analysis is forthcoming. I'd hoped that more info would be available this morning -- what happened to the inaccessible ones? -- but nope.

Status Updates From Beyond The Grave

Thanks to a new Facebook app, you can send messages to your online friends from beyond the grave. Which isn't creepy at all!
The app, called If I Die, lets users record a video farewell or text message, then save it — hopefully for a very long time — before the moment comes that you shuffle off this vale of tears. That’s when a few Facebook friends do you a favor that will make you eternally grateful. The app requires you to designate three Facebook friends as executors of your message, and when all three of them confirm that you have in fact, died, your parting words will be displayed for all to see on your Facebook wall, at one time or on a schedule. The possibilities for your farewell message are endless, says app developer Willook, an Israel-based startup that describes itself as specializing in “'time capsule' services and products.”
There's a promotional video, of course.

Hospital Investigates Complaints Against B-Jay’s Baby Dramas

Earlier this week Trent revealed some pretty massive dramas going on with Lennox Hill Hospital, where Beyoncegave birth to baby Blue Ivy. Extremely tight security had led to other new parents allegedly being prevented from visiting their newborn babies. We were all up in arms, despite our love for B-Jay and the new princess. This was pretty disappointing to hear. Yeterday, we learned that the complaint was investigated by the Health Department. Read below to find out what happened..
A rep for the Health Dept. told the NY Daily News, “Whenever we receive a complaint, we look into it. It’s not necessarily an investigation. It could be a review. Most likely in this case, it would be an investigation.”
News sources earlier this week were saying that at least two families had contacted them about not being able to visit newborns in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit because of security. The hospital’s executive director, Frank Danza, admitted to reporters on Tuesday that ‘certain unusual steps were taken to accommodate the famous couple, such as having security cameras covered up with tape…additional security guards were brought in, but since [having] spoken with half of the dozen or so new parents who were at the hospital over the weekend…none of them reported being blocked from seeing their newborns’.
This is NOT confirmed, but there is talk about those alleged complaints not being credible. NY Daily News wrote that, “In one case, the person who lodged the complaint admitted he had not been in the hospital at the time, but was complaining about what he had read in the newspaper.”
The good news is that a Health Department spokesman has now officially stated that the two complaints were reviewed and have since been DISMISSED.
I for one feel relieved by this news, I didn’t like thinking that Beyonce and Jay-Z had acted in such a selfish way. I am sure that the saga will continue.. with such a hugely famous baby being born, this wont be the end of it. It is great that the complaints were taken seriously by the hospital (despite issues of credibility), and I’m glad that an investigation was done. This was an important issue, I’m just so glad that it didn’t end up showing an ugly side to a pretty special couple.

Why We Need to Save the World's Last Remaining LGBT Bookstores

"Not many places in the world can be considered gay landmarks, but certainly LGBT bookstores have played a big part in cultivating our history, serving as resource centers for queer and questioning youth and fostering relationships in gayborhoods beyond one-night stands and drunken blackouts.

Unfortunately, when it comes to making ends meet, these independent bookstores are barely hanging on by a thread.

So if every LGBT bookstore in the world is set to fade (a frightening yet viable possibility), who will proudly stock our queer, oftentimes "unpublishable" stories? Who will help us validate our fight against mainstream censorship? What will be our gayborhoods' living rooms? Amazon.com certainly won't.

With that in mind, check out the following list of 10 still-vibrant brick-and-mortar LGBT bookstores all over the world."

WGB:  I have some great memories buying coming out books at Glad Day Bookstore that use to be on Boylston Street in Boston and later on at We Think the World of You bookstore in the South End.  I think it is a bank now sadly...

Betty Crocker Helps Betty White Celebrate Her 90th Birthday

The fabulous Betty White will celebrate her 90th birthday next Tuesday January 17 but on Monday the 16th, NBCwill pay homage to the enduring Golden Girl with a TV special called Betty White’s 90th Birthday: A Tribute to America’s Golden Girl. This birthday special will feature a host of celebrity stars that will share their Birthday Lurve for our dear Betty. Additionally, the Betty Crocker company is also celebrating their 90th birthday this year … and they graciously provided a massively festive birthday cake for Betty White‘s NBC birthday celebration. Click below to check out some photos of Betty White, her famous friends Carol Burnett & Mary Tyler Moore and her very own Betty Crocker birthday cake at last night’s TV special taping.

From one legend to another, Betty Crocker has created a show-stopping birthday cake for Betty White’s 90th birthday special, which airs Monday, January 16 (8-9:30 p.m. ET) on NBC. Betty Crocker will present Betty White with a vibrant Triple Chocolate Celebration Cake inspired by the legendary star. Betty Crocker will also provide each celebrity guest of the NBC special with one of several hundred individual cakes that replicate the look of the Celebration Cake’s top tier. Both Betty Crocker and Betty White are celebrating their ninetieth year as American icons. “Betty White is one of the most popular actresses of our time, and Betty Crocker is honored to create this one-of-a-kind birthday cake for her,” said Kristen Olson, food editor with Betty Crocker. “This cake is our gift to Betty White in celebration of her ninety amazing years, and we think this vibrant cake really reflects her personality and the many things we love about her.” The three-tiered Triple Chocolate Celebration Cake, flown by private plane from Betty Crocker’s Minneapolis home to Los Angeles for Betty White’s birthday, is a decadent chocolate cake layered with sumptuous chocolate mousse and rich chocolate ganache. Marrying classic and modern elements, the red, orange and magenta cake is decorated with dozens of fondant roses, shimmery edible pearls and golden candles – and hidden among the roses – a small replica of Betty’s beloved dog Pontiac. The NBC special will celebrate White’s 90th birthday and will honor one of the world’s most beloved entertainers. The star-studded event will be taped live at the Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. Some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, including many of White’s co-stars, will be on hand to deliver their birthday wishes. The Birth Of Beyoncé’s Baby Prevented Other Parents From Visiting Their Newborns

As we should all know by now, Beyoncé and hubby Jay-Z welcomed the birth of their blessed first born child late Saturday night at Lenox Hill Hospital in NYC … a darling little girl they named Blue Ivy. While many folks insideB-Jay‘s inner circle are extolling the “beauty” of princess Blue Ivy, today we learn of the ugly side of the baby girl’s birth. In order to keep a tight lock on security surrounding Beyoncé giving birth, Lennox Hill Hospitalreportedly gave Beyoncé and Jay-Z‘s security detail the power to regulate who was allowed where inside the hospital. As a result, reports say, other families were BARRED from having access to their just-born children in the intensive care unit — because they were NOT allowed to go anywhere in the hospital near Beyoncé and her baby. Damn.

Beyonce and Jay-Z welcomed their daughter Blue Ivy Carter this weekend, but the birth has landed Lenox Hill Hospital in the middle of a controversy. One new parent at the hospital is furious, claiming Blue Ivy’s arrival kept them from spending time with their own newborns in intensive care. Neil Nash-Coulon of Bedford-Stuyvesant says hospital security kept putting the hallway on lockdown to accommodate Beyonce’s visitors. “People don’t need to be treated like this when dealing with sick children,” Coulon said. Coulon says Lenox Hill Hospital kept his family out of the waiting area. “They should have been more strategic with where they put her,” Coulon said. “You can’t cordon off the [Neonatal Intensive Care Unit]. These are small newborns who need care, and you’re just going to take over the hospital like you own it?” The hospital says because of privacy issues, they can not confirm that Beyonce gave birth there on Saturday. Reports indicate the singer and husband Jay-Z paid the hospital around $1.3 million for an entire floor. Coulon says his family and other patients affected deserve an apology. “We shouldn’t have to deal with drama because they’re superstars… It isn’t fair,” he said. Lenox Hill hospital tells CBS 2 putting a hallway on lockdown for a patient is not uncommon and is usually done for safety reasons. The hospital says it does not rent out floors, but it wasn’t ready to comment on specific measures taken this past weekend.
Look, I get it … B-Jay are one of the most famous celebrity couples in the world and they have the power and influence to pay for whatever outrageous demands they desire … but this claim that their overzealous security measures prevented other parents from having access to their newborn children is pretty vile and disgusting to me. BUT, if true, the blame doesn’t rest with Beyoncé and Jay … the blame rests squarely on Lenox Hill Hospital. I’d say the hospital owes the other parents MORE than just a mere apology. Putting the importance of private security of celebs over the health and well-being of other non-celebrity patients is completely outrageous. IMHO, it’s a dangerous thing when hospitals start treating some patients better than others … it kinda flies in the face of the Hippocratic oath. I’m really happy that B-Jay gave birth to a healthy baby, but it really bums me out that their baby’s birth lead to the mistreatment of other patients who should’ve also been allowed to celebrate the births of their children unfettered by private security measures.
