Colorado is inching closer to asking voters whether the state's gay marriage ban should be repealed.
Though voters in 2006 amended the state constitution to ban marriage equality, the state board that deals with ballot measures just approved the language of a measure that would legalize marriage between two consenting people of any gender, allowing supporters to begin gathering the 86,000 signatures needed to place it on the 2012 ballot, the Associated Press reports.
Aurora college student Mark Olmstead, who is organizing the effort, told the The Denver Post that he believes Colorado residents have become more supportive of marriage equality among in the past few years.
Colorado legislators this year considered a bill to establish civil unions for same-sex couples, but it died in a House committee in April.
