What Was Gay About Last Night’s Tony Awards, Besides Everything

via Queerty by Dave White on 6/13/11

The Tony Awards joke that's been told so many times it's not even a joke at this point became the subject of host Neil Patrick Harris' opening number at last night's annual dispersal of trophies to New York stage productions most people still haven't seen or even yet heard about in a song called "It's Not Just For Gays Anymore."
In the accompanying video, please enjoy Brooke Shields (currently on Broadway in The Addams Family) as she takes a stab at assisting NPH with a singing cameo. Then another stab. Then a third one where she finally kinda/sorta gets the job done. Except not at all, really. That begins at the 3:10 mark.
As for the rest of the night, the other big homo moments included Larry Kramer's 1985 beginning-of-the-AIDS-crisis drama The Normal Heart winning the Tony for Best Revival of a Play, both Ellen Barkin and John Benjamin Hickey winning awards for Best Performance by An Actress in a Featured Role and Best Performance by An Actor In a Featured Role, respectively; NPH dueting with Hugh Jackman in a who's-the-better-awards-show-host bit that included them crooning "You're the Top" to one another; and Martha Wash belting out her vintage disco anthem  "It's Raining Men" currently showcased in the musical Priscilla, Queen of The Desert.
In other words, nothing out of the ordinary. Congratulations to all the winners.
